GYO Success Story: Meet Sean!

When schools shut down in March 2020, we took Grow Your Own online so that we could continue to meet the demand for well-trained teacher assistants. Here is a story of one GYO participant… who is actually a double graduate of KCC!

Sean first heard about GYO from a flyer posted in a recreation center and was intrigued by the opportunity to begin a career in education. As a talented youth worker, he had already found his calling working with young children and wanted to take the next step in his career.

When Sean brought the flyer home and expressed interest to his mother, she told him that he had actually attended preschool at KCC (then the Kennedy Child Study Center) many years ago! This made Sean's connection to the program and desire to achieve his Teacher Assistant certification all the more meaningful. As a student who benefited from early childhood special education services himself, Sean brings a unique perspective and extraordinary empathy to his role as a teacher assistant.

By taking GYO online, KCC will be able to reach even more aspiring teacher assistants like Sean in 2021 and beyond.

I never expected something like [COVID-19] to happen. I won’t let it detour me from trying to find a job from this program to further my learning. My end goal is to one day go back to school and further my education. I feel empowered now that I know that I can focus on the task that I put before myself. This was a wonderful learning experience for me.
