Grow Your Own (GYO)
Workforce Development Program

Launched in 2018 with seed funding from the Robin Hood Foundation, GYO seeks to recruit and train individuals from our home communities to work in early childhood special education as certified teacher assistants. GYO furthers our mission of providing high-quality services for young children with special needs by cultivating a committed and well-trained workforce. It also seeks to address the national teacher shortage on a local level by encouraging entry into the education field, while providing a pathway to a stable career in education for un- and under-employed individuals from the neighborhoods we serve.

GYO combines hand-on experience in the classrooms with professional development and exam preparation. Our intensive job-placement services help graduates find suitable positions at early childhood providers throughout the city. We are currently running four, 6-week training sessions per year, with the goal of preparing up to 80 individuals annually to take the teacher assistant certification exam.

We run open houses for interested candidates throughout the year. If you are interested in applying for the GYO program, please contact Mira Handman at mhandman@kenchild.org for more information.
