STEP 1: Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS) Exam

|Part of becoming a Certified Teacher Assistant consist of taking the NYS ATAS Exam|
Today you will take a practice exam consisting of 15 Math, ELA, and Teacher Assistant questions. You will be given 20 minutes to complete the exam. Keep in mind, the ATAS questions are not questions that you can search up online to find the answers to. However, if you are unsure about any question, skip the question for now, then return to it later.
(FYI: Your score may or may not affect your chances of being accepted into our program.)

STEP 2: Comprehensive Background Check (CBC) Request

Working in the Education Sector means completing background checks to assure the safety of students -
A CBC background checks all the homes you lived at to make sure their has not been any reports of child abuse in each home. When completing this form:

  • Please take your time completing this form

  • Do not enter dates at the bottom of each form

  • Be sure to enter all addresses you’ve lived at for 28 years (1995-now)

STEP 3: Medical clearance

In order to work in education a physical examination must be completed and approved by our nurse -
You CANNOT start our program without medical clearance. If you’ve already completed a physical for the year, you would still need to schedule a medical appointment for a TB Test, which is not usually part of a annual physical- it must be requested.

  • Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provide this week or as soon as possible

  • If you do not have a medical provider, you may be able to go into a walk-in clinic or urgent care facility

  • If you do not have have health insurance, please let us know right away

STEP 4: (MANHATTAN ONLY) DOe Background check scheduling

A nomination will be placed for you in the DOE background system for fingerprinting -
In addition to completing a CBC form, fingerprints have to be taken with the DOE background system called PETS.
